The All Ireland Schools ChessZ Championship was held in Limerick on friday with Castlebar edging out Drogheda GS by half a point to claim the title. So why is that on here….club member Piotr Baczkowski on board 1 led the way and with a score of 6/6, won the Individual Champion prize. Piotr will be competing in the Junior Section at the Malahide Congress, so good luck to all the members who will be competing in the Leinster Championship.
Early reports have Sean McLoughlin 1/2 in the Senior section. Tomorrow he faces the highly rated Mihailo Manoljovic in an eagerly awaited encounter.
The Club is well represented in the Intermediate Section with Gavin Doyle leading the charge on 2/2. Muhtarim Ul Haque waits on board 1 for Gavin, and it does not get easier for Danny Dwyer or Luke Scott on 1.5/2 as they face Utkarsh Gupta and Daniil Zelenchuk respectively. Robert McLoughlin with 1/2 faces Roman Kremerts in his match, and there is an aged Dinosaur wandering around the undergrowth somewhere…….
Four Juniors carry the Club flag in this section, with Piotr 2/2, playing the experienced 2nd seed Peter McGrath from Elm Mount. Matthew Tiernan in his first ever rated competition has 1/2 and plays white against Vishal Bargav; Brothers Tomasz & Maciej Fijalkowski face Max O’Neill and Robert Burns in their games. For the 3 young lads, its about learning and gaining matchplay experience & becoming more aware of what’s involved. The results will come….so don’t worry!
