It has long been a goal of the Blanchardstown Chess club that an official chess tournament be held somewhere out here in Dublin 15 area, or within easy reach. This would allow both our juniors and seniors play in a rated chess tournament, testing themselves against the best players from other parts of Ireland. Playing in such a competition would crucially allow our members to gain an official chess rating.
Our small chess club has therefore decided to run two FIDE rated chess events. The series is named “Gens Una Sumus” , being a Latin phrase meaning “we are all one family”. That seemed a fair and simple explanation of how our Irish chess world behaves; and is certainly how our club views itself and its membership and friends. So we use that naming for our set of chess events. It is also the motto of the World Chess Federation!
